Not quite a B-movie, but not a high-budget blockbuster either. Truly interesting cast of characters, and well acted. The white buffalo itself is more than just a runaway and angry bison. There is a hint of the supernatural that adds to the creepy undercurrents. The understated performance by Bronson is spot-on, but there are the occasional awkward scenes that last all of 30 seconds each. certainly not enough to spoil the movie. My advice is to watch the movie late at night with the lights turned down and soak up the atmosphere. I am a little bothered by the lack of video quality, but perhaps they will correct this when the blu-ray finally arrives. It took long enough for it to go to DVD in the first place!!!
ReviewsThe Critics Dismissed This As "Paws" In 1977Review Date: 2010-05-27 Rating: 8 out of 10I originally saw this on a double-bill with "Demon Seed" when I was 14. For whatever reason it inexplicably stayed with me. This is the first time I've seen it some thirty years on and I still like it but with reservations. I think as a teenager I viewed it as a monster-western and that may explain the appeal. The film now strikes me as a character study of two sworn enemies Wild Bill Hickok(Charles Bronson) and Crazy Horse (Will Sampson) bound together by their pursuit of an elusive quarry. The acting of both men is quite good but I think their characters are underwritten which I think lies in the script. It may also lie with the film's relatively brief running time of 97 minutes. If ever a film deserves an expanded director's edition "The White Buffalo" is it. Then of course there's the methaphorical title animal. The creature effects are so ridiculous, though the sound effects are good, that it doesn't really suggest the terror the buffalo strikes in men's hearts. Despite these qualms I highly recommend the film. It's an ambitious film as opposed to being a pretentious or ponderous one. I'll take any film that takes the high road and falls a tad short over a mediocre one that achieves it's meager intentions.Great transferReview Date: 2010-05-25 Rating: 8 out of 10Odd but strangely compelling mix of "Jaws" and western myth featuring Bronson as Wild Bill Hickock and Will (Chief from "One Flew from the Cuckoo's Nest")Sampson as Crazy Horse hunting a pretty fake looking white buffalo. Together with Bronson's one eyed cohort (played by Jack Warden, who's great), they hunt after this beast under fake names, for if their true infamous names were ever revealed, they would be sworn enemies.
This DVD-R is a pretty first rate transfer, probably the best this film ever looked. The movie is an acquired taste. It isn't your typical western or Bronson film for that matter, talking a lot with a collection of stock colorful western phrases. Potential cult possibilities with its' monster movie in the west motif, buddy western conventions and some unintentional laughs here and there along the way.Moby Dick Meets The Wild WestReview Date: 2010-05-24 Rating: 4 out of 10and a worse retelling of it I can't recall.
But it's so bad it's fun.
The cast alone is worth the viewing.
An especially good turn is Hickcock telling Crazy Horse how the Indians have bullied each other across the plains (and the did), and now they've met a bigger bully so deal with it.underrated and misunderstoodReview Date: 2010-05-23 Rating: 10 out of 10One of the best scripts bronson was provided with, the screenplay was written by author of the book. You can cut this movie down by saying the special effects on the buffalo were lame, but the performances of bronson, will sampson and everybody else was first rate, near the end of the movie there is a closeup shot of bronson and his eyes which is haunting, he was really into the part in this one, You really have to pay attention to the dialog in this one, I was cracking up on the " dialog between novack and bronson and ridding something. The conversation between bronson and sampson about the decline of the indian empire still sticks in my mind today. I owed this on laser disc years ago, but this transfer if far superior, It has been playing on cable, ;but widescreen version is just great for the outdoor shots. This is the type of movie to pay attention to the details. Without a doubt the best dvd purchase i have made in a long time. The music by John Barry is also classic. Running time: 97 minutesTheatrical release date: 1977-05
